More than Just a Theater
Enriching the lives of our children through the arts
By The Plaza Arts Center
When you think of The Plaza Arts Center, you might remember a stage performance held here, or you might think of the school that once occupied our historic building. While so many people living in our region know The Plaza to be a performing arts venue, we offer so much more to the community, including to the underserved and our children. One of our guiding principles is recognizing the importance of art in childhood development and in turn offering a variety of artistic activities for children of all ages and interests – including art classes and camps, theater performances and productions, and an annual photography contest and exhibition. The Plaza Community Center, located directly behind our main building, offers classes and activities to light even the smallest artistic spark. The After School Arts Program, Video Course, and Summer Camps take place at the Community Center and are offered at various times throughout the year for free or at a low cost.
During the school year, we welcome over one hundred students each month to participate in our free After School Arts Program where all kinds of artistic mediums including painting, pottery, and creative writing are taught – complete with one-on-one instruction and a snack. Children in school systems across the Lake area also visit The Plaza four times a year to enjoy performances by the Georgia Ensemble Theater providing dynamic, engaging performances and Q&A sessions with the children after the show.
In the summertime, The Plaza Arts Center offers Camp Broadway & Summer Art Camp each year. Camp Broadway provides instruction in singing, dance, costumes, as well as sound and lighting. The weeklong camp is wrapped up by a showcase performance for family and friends held on The Plaza stage, and that’s the part the kids and volunteers love the most! Summer Art Camp is fun-filled week of activities including painting, drawing, pottery, weaving, and other crafts, perfect for creative kids that have an interest in the arts.
The Plaza Arts Center is dedicated to providing experiences that enrich the lives of the youth in our community. Exposure to the Arts is proven to increase academic performance and spark creativity, and we couldn’t introduce children in our community to this without the support from our Plaza Partners, dedicated volunteers, and corporate sponsors across the Lake Country and beyond. We would love your support in any way you feel compelled, may it be attending a performance or sponsoring a child to attend a summer camp.
